Eight Questions for Your Doctor
Steps to take AFTER a Diagnosis

I'm going to share one of the most important questions you’ve ever heard. Use it in the right situation, and it might save your life.

The next time you’re talking to a doctor, physician or medical professional about a problem, make sure to ask this at some point. “What is the CAUSE of my problem?” Here’s why it’s so important and powerful.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine (we’ll call him Terry) started noticing changes. Terry’s blood pressure had continued to creep up over the years, and his doctor started him on medication. A few months after that, Terry got another prescription to deal with his rising cholesterol. But he wasn’t feeling any better.

Within a year of starting those medications, Terry had problems taking deep breaths. He got winded much quicker than he used to. Eventually, Terry’s doctor added an inhaler to his prescription pile. Every time there was a symptom, the doctor responded with a treatment. But none of the pills or programs were helping Terry get back to normal.

Terry was feeling worse than usual one night, so he went to the emergency room. That decision probably saved his life. Terry didn’t know it, but he was having a heart attack. Over the next few days, doctors discovered Terry’s coronary arteries were between 80 and 90% blocked. He had emergency quadruple bypass surgery, and his recovery is going well today.

Over the years, Terry was showing many of the classic symptoms of clogged arteries. He had fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, lower back pain, cold hands and even hair loss. But instead of looking for a cause, his doctors focused on diagnosing and treating the symptoms. At no point until the heart attack did they identify the underlying CAUSE of all the problems.

That’s why it’s up to you. When dealing with a medical issue, somebody must look for the CAUSE of your problem. A diagnosis of chronic fatigue sounds excellent, but what brought it on? Being diagnosed with anemia is an important finding, but why is that happening now? Treatments are much more effective when they’re targeted at eliminating or controlling a cause rather than alleviating symptoms.

After that, there are seven additional questions you should ask. Take this list with you the next time you have an appointment.

ASK: What are the treatment options?

It’s essential to ask about the various treatment options available, including the benefits and risks associated with each one.

ASK: What are the side effects of the treatment?

Treatment often comes with side effects that can affect your daily life. It’s important to ask about these side effects to prepare yourself accordingly.

ASK: How will this treatment interact with any drugs or supplements I’m currently taking?

Some drug interactions can make your medication less effective, and some combinations are dangerous. Remember that supplements can cause problems as well. Ensure your doctor has a complete list of everything, including prescription, over-the-counter and supplements you’re taking.

ASK: How will this treatment impact my daily life?

Some medicines can significantly impact your everyday life, and it’s important to know what to expect to prepare accordingly.

ASK: What can I do to help myself?

Ask your doctor about lifestyle changes or other measures you can take to improve your health and support your treatment.

ASK: What are the warning signs that I should look out for?

Knowing the warning signs of potential complications or relapses can help you seek medical attention quickly and avoid serious consequences.

ASK: When should I follow up with you?

Follow-up appointments are essential to ensure your treatment is effective and monitor potential complications.

All these questions may give you a lot of information at once. Take notes or use your phone to record the conversation.

When you go home, keep a list handy, so you can write down more questions or observations to share with your doctor on follow-up visits. Keep asking questions; it could be a matter of life or death.
